Laurier Avenue bike lane project photo...looks nice!

This is the City of Ottawa's own plan and digital conception of the new Laurier Avenue bike lane project. The cyclist pictured is heading east on Laurier at Lyon Street.
The Bank Street Business Improvement Area president has stated that his group will fight this project.

  1. It DOES look nice. Do you know why the business association doesn't like it? Maybe he wants a bike lane on Bank Street?

  2. Ha! No. The president of the Bank St., BIA is very anti-bike. Not sure why he feels Laurier Avenue is the business of the Bank Street BIA! The Bank Street BIA seem to oppose any activity on their street other than parking. They opposed the Pride parade because of the disruption. So they lose goodwill and potential customers instead. Go figure! The Somerset BIA opposed bike lanes on Somerset. I think they are afraid to listen to reason. Studies show that cyclists bring money to small business. I know that I avoid shopping on Somerset because it is so unfriendly to bikes. And I refuse to drive my car for a short trip to Bank or Somerset (with some exceptions). The thinking is rather antiquated in my opinion.

  3. I had hoped for Somerset as I ride there each day to Bay to go to to Sparks & Lyon. Too bad Bank St.BIA is taking this stance

  4. I agree! Somerset had so much going for it. It also has, or perhaps had, the potential to eventually connect with bike friendly Wellington Village and Westboro. Too bad about the BIA.

  5. Note that there is an updated version of that image that shows dedicated signals for cyclists. I don't know where you can get a copy, I only sa 1g on the boards at the public open house.
